The Duke of Edinburghs Award (the Award), is the world leading youth leadership and self-development program, founded in the philosophy that personal empowerment in the lives of young people is best achieved through community engagement. The Award program uses community service as a tool to build confidence, self-esteem, resiliency, and increased leadership capacity in young people. From humble beginnings with marginalized youth from the east end of London in the U.K., the Award has expanded to 144 countries with over seven million participants worldwide, including 37,000 in Canada and over 6,500 in Alberta.
Offering individuals the chance to develop their skills, give back to their communities, and explore and be challenged by the great outdoors, the Award opens doors that lead young people to live their best possible lives. Moreover, the Award program offers the highest recognition in Canada for young people who meet their goals and challenges. The Bronze Award is presented by local community leaders; the Silver Award is presented by the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. The Gold Award is presented to achievers by a member of the Royal Family or the Governor General of Canada.
"Before I started [the Award], I didn't really work towards goals... joining the program has helped me realize my goals. It has also helped me get more in touch with my culture and learn new skills."
— Ryker W., Bronze Award Achiever
"I became more purposeful with my service and more often went out of my way to help others in everyday life... overall, my time in the Silver Level has allowed me to develop many talents and become more self-reliant."
— Hannah S., Silver Award Achiever
"My involvement throughout the Duke of Edinburgh's Award process has really been an experience of self discovery. It allowed me to learn about myself, what I truly value, my likes and dislikes, and what kind of person I want to be."
— Natalie W., Gold Award Achiever
