The Alberta Adolescent Recovery Centre (AARC) is an accredited non-profit, long-term family treatment centre for chemically-addicted adolescents. Since its inception in 1992, AARC has graduated over 570 clients and approximately 2,000 additional family members. Every day, AARC sees the devastating impact of drug and alcohol addiction on youth and their families. Addiction does not play favourites; it impacts people from all walks of life, income levels and demographics. AARC’s treatment program is specially designed for adolescents 12 to 21 years of age, who are diagnosed with a substance use disorder (DSM-5). Our organization is unique to Alberta and Canada in terms of its 12 step abstinence-based model. AARC recognizes addiction as a complex interaction between the biological, psychological, social, and spiritual. Our comprehensive family treatment model addresses the multidimensional nature of addiction. AARC is also a leader in community education and prevention, recognizing that education is our best defense against the devastation of addiction. AARC’s community education team provides evidenced-based educational programs to students, parents, educators, community agencies, health care providers, and law enforcement staff, with respect to adolescent drug and alcohol use, abuse and addiction. AARC’s community education and research team aims to increase awareness, enhance education, create prevention strategies, and facilitate early intervention supports. Parents and youth who have experienced addiction, treatment and recovery are included in these presentations. This educational and preventive initiative has allowed AARC to expand its community outreach, while maintaining the high standard of adolescent and family treatment for which it is known.
